Braces are a type of orthodontic treatment that straighten and re-align your smile by putting a steady and gentle pressure on your teeth that gradually moves them into position.

Braces have four basic parts:

• Brackets attached to each tooth, usually made of metal or ceramic;
• Bonding material that attaches the bracket to the tooth, such as glue or a metal band;
• Arch Wires, which are wires that run through the brackets;
• A Ligature Elastic (or o-ring) that connects the bracket and the arch wire. (Self-ligating braces don’t require elastics.)

When the arch wire places pressure on the bracket, teeth are slowly moved into position. Some patients will have rubber bands placed on their braces to move their teeth in a particular direction. Other patients may need to wear headgear at night to keep certain teeth from moving from their position.

After your braces are taken off, you’ll notice:

• It will be easier to clean your teeth
• Headaches may be reduced
• Snoring may be reduced
• You will feel less strain on your teeth
• Your risk for gum disease, tooth loss, and tooth decay will be reduced
